West Islip Thirst Project, the world's largest fundraising chapter of ThirstProject.org was started by high school teacher Paola Nilsen and her students in 2012. At the time, Twitter was becoming popular, and Paola began following actress and activist, Pauley Perrette who happened to sit on the Board of Directors for the Thirst Project, a non-profit organization in California and the largest youth-based charity whose mission is to provide access to clean water for people in developing countries.
After contacting Mr. Seth Maxwell, the CEO and founder of Thirst Project and learning that 100% of the money raised channels directly to funding wells, Paola was sold on the charity's vision and wanted to bring Thirst Project to West Islip. In the beginning, six dedicated students at West Islip High School helped count donated change on her classroom floor after school. Since those early years, attendance has increased to an average of 120-150 students each year. To date, West Islip has raised $165,141 to fund fresh water projects in Central America, Africa, and India. This translates to over 6,000 people worldwide who now have sustainable, clean-water sources thanks to the generosity of the West Islip community.
West Islip High School has been recognized over the years at the annual Thirst Gala held in Los Angeles. A feature of the Gala is the presentation of the Power of Youth Award bestowed in recognition of students’ exceptional efforts - West Islip has been honored four times in the past seven years. In 2013, Ms. Nilsen was honored with the Volunteer of the Year Award, and in July 2019, she and her students earned the Legacy Award for their consistent effort as the top fundraising school in the world.
In addition to their awards, students and parents from West Islip made the journey to Eswatini in southern Africa, where Thirst Project is focused on the effort to have the entire country gain access to clean water in this decade! Many of these West Islip residents seized the opportunity to witness, first-hand, the effect of their fund-raising energies and were able to visit and celebrate with hundreds of community members in Africa who now enjoy the sustainable borehole wells West Islip financed.
These water projects help stabilize the future for all who use them. Women and children, once forced to walk an average of 3.75 miles a day to a contaminated water source, now have the opportunity to further their education and seek employment! Clean water grows gardens and supports a more healthy and vibrant community.
